Our purpose
Grant Witness was built because no single source existed to show—in full, in real time, and at the grant level—how federal science funding is changing under the Trump administration.
Our team
We are researchers, data scientists, and lawyers bringing data to the fight for American science and the rule of law.
We come from academic, government, and nonprofit institutions. We’ve been funded by NIH and NSF. And we believe the public, the press, and the legal system deserve access to a complete, verifiable, and unimpeachable record of what is happening to American science.
What we're tracking
We track science-related grantmaking activity by the federal government, including grant terminations, grant freezes, changes made to existing grants, and new awards.

Grant-level tracking
Grant-level data is our foundation. Across multiple federal agencies, each with its distinct schema and conventions, we track how individual grants are awarded, terminated, and changed. We also link each grant to additional data points to provide more context about the award, the scientists and institutions involved in it, and the locations that benefit most from it.

Data transparency
Our methods and links to original data sources are published alongside our data. We aim to be fully transparent so users can verify for themselves the findings we present. Weekly updates
We aim to refresh data every Monday. See our Weekly Reports for highlights on what changed—new terminations, records updated, agencies added, or other analyses.

Rapid responses
Federal funding news often moves fast. We publish new data and analyses as soon as we are confident in the results that we produce and in our ability to transparently communicate them. When needed, we also update existing analyses to reflect the rapidly evolving landscape, and we publish fresh angles as the story shifts so journalists, researchers, institutional administrators, and other partners can make real-time decisions on what matters right now.
