What is Grant Witness?
Grant Witness is a watchdog group built to document changes in science grantmaking activity under the Trump administration. We track federal grant funding across several agencies, detailing disruptions to research grants in near real time. We aim to be comprehensive, authoritative, and fully transparent. We keep receipts, and we display every piece of data behind our results and conclusions.
We use this data to build and preserve a record of Trump administration activities; to inform journalists, scientists, advocates, and other storytellers; and to support policymakers, Congress, and public interest legal groups seeking to protect American scientific leadership and innovation.
Grant Witness is a project of the Raft Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit fiscal sponsor.
Where does the data come from?
We aggregate data from as many sources as possible to verify and validate our conclusions. Data sources include publicly available, government-wide spending datasets as well as agency-specific datasets. We also crowdsource information, collect first-hand reports from affected scientists, institutions, and administrators, incorporate whistleblower accounts, and scrape public court filings for additional insights. As a result, our datasets are far more comprehensive than any other publicly available source of information on federal grantmaking activity.
How often is the site updated?
Every dataset we maintain is updated at least weekly, usually on Monday evening. During times of extraordinary grant-related activity—for example, when the Trump administration terminates tens or hundreds of awards in a given week—we may run our data scraping and aggregating pipelines more frequently (e.g., daily) to capture near real-time insights into the Trump administration’s activities.
Can I use this data in my own reporting?
Emphatically yes! Our datasets do not speak for themselves. We welcome efforts and expertise from journalists, policymakers, and all other storytellers to translate our data for their respective audiences.
